When comparing suitcase sets on DHgate, buy the pieces your trips actually need. A matching set can suit a household that uses cabin and checked luggage; a single case is the better starting point if the other sizes would stay in storage. Before choosing a listing, compare each case’s full outside dimensions, empty weight, included pieces and storage requirements. The word “carry-on” in a title does not establish airline acceptance.

One suitcase or a complete set?
Start with your next two or three trips. Write down who travels, what each person packs and whether you expect to check luggage. Count the cases you would use together, rather than buying the largest advertised piece count.

A suitcase set can include wheeled cases, a weekender, a garment bag or smaller accessories. Check the contents of the selected DHgate option: a “five-piece” label should not be read as five rolling suitcases. Compare cases and accessory bags separately.

Compare outside dimensions and empty weight for every case
Do not use a nominal size such as “20-inch” as the complete measurement. Ask for height, width and depth including wheels, fixed handles and other protruding parts. A seller’s shell measurement and an airline’s outside measurement may refer to different things.
As an airline-specific example checked on September 14, 2026, Delta’s carry-on guidance gives a maximum of 22 × 14 × 9 inches, including handles and wheels, and a combined length, width and height limit of 45 inches. These are Delta’s published limits, not proof that a suitcase on DHgate qualifies. Check your own itinerary’s operating carrier and current rules before ordering.
For each piece in a DHgate shortlist, record:
- Full outside dimensions when closed and, if applicable, expanded.
- Empty case weight, rather than the shipping weight of the whole set.
- The airline allowance you are comparing it against.
- The size and weight you would be comfortable lifting when packed.
An expansion zip gives you another configuration to measure. Do not assume the expanded case still fits a cabin limit. For checked luggage, compare the packed weight with the allowance on your booking; an empty case already uses part of that allowance.
Underseat bags need their own check. Being the smallest piece in a set does not establish that a bag fits your seat’s available space or your airline’s personal-item rules.
Read the construction details behind the photos
A listing photo helps identify features to investigate. It cannot establish durability, waterproofing or how smoothly a loaded case rolls.
Shell and fabric. Ask for the material of each main case and whether the description refers to the shell, lining or trim. If a listing names ABS, polycarbonate, a blend or textile fabric, preserve that exact distinction when comparing it with another listing. “Hard shell” alone is not a complete material specification. Do not infer protection from the material name without evidence for that product.
Wheels and handles. Compare the wheel arrangement and handle positions with how you travel: standing in queues, carrying bags upstairs and lifting into a vehicle involve different movements. Request close-up photos of wheel attachments, the telescoping handle and lifting handles. If repairability matters, ask whether replacement parts exist for that exact model; a generic statement about spare wheels is insufficient.
Interior layout. Look for divider panels, compression straps and pockets in the selected size. Decide where shoes, toiletries and clothing would go. An accessory pouch can be useful, but it does not replace the capacity of another suitcase.
Locks and zips. Identify what is included and obtain the operating instructions. Do not treat a lock label as a theft guarantee or a promise that luggage will pass an airline or airport check.
Nesting and expansion solve different problems
Expansion changes packing space while the suitcase is in use. Nesting means smaller empty cases fit inside larger ones for storage. A set can have one feature without the other.
Before buying a set for a small home, request a photo or dimensions showing the pieces nested. Confirm which cases fit inside which, whether accessory bags also fit, and the outside footprint of the largest case. Compare that footprint with the cupboard or storage area you intend to use.
Check the manufacturer’s care guidance for the shell or fabric, wheels and lining. Follow its cleaning and drying instructions rather than assuming a cleaner suitable for one piece is suitable for the whole set.
