What is included in landed cost?
For planning, landed cost can include product cost, freight, duties or taxes, payment fees, packaging, fulfillment-related preparation, and a reserve for returns or unsellable units. The exact components depend on the product, destination, shipping route, sales channel, and business model.
Why use sellable units instead of ordered units?
Not every ordered unit necessarily becomes sellable inventory. Damage, defects, missing quantities, samples, inspection losses, or compliance problems can reduce the sellable count. Dividing total landed cost by expected sellable units produces a more conservative planning figure.
Does the calculator determine customs duty?
No. Duty and tax inputs are user-supplied planning estimates. Classification, valuation, origin, destination rules, exemptions, and current policy can change the actual amount. Verify the product and destination with appropriate official or professional sources before ordering.
What is a controlled test budget?
A controlled test budget limits the cash and inventory exposure while producing evidence about product fit, supplier performance, delivery, defects, demand, and returns. It should include the cost of learning, not only the purchase price, and it should remain affordable if the test performs poorly.
Why can a positive gross margin still be a bad order?
Gross margin may not include advertising, storage, labor, customer support, platform selling fees, financing, long return cycles, or slow inventory. It also does not measure demand. Use it as one decision input, then test the assumptions that can reduce sellable units or raise operating cost.
How should MOQ be evaluated?
Compare MOQ with expected sell-through, product shelf life, seasonality, storage, cash conversion, defect exposure, and the cost of reordering. A lower unit price at a larger MOQ can increase total risk if inventory turns slowly or the product has not been validated.
